Model Train Sets – 3 Essential Tips To Choosing The Model Train Set For You

Choosing a model train set can be overwhelming simply because of the huge amount of choice available.

I’ll give you a few pointers in this article that will help you choose between the large selection of model train sets available today.

Model Train Set Scale

The first choice you want to make is the scale. Scale is the proportion of the model to the real-life train.

I suggest you consider who you are buying the model railway set for. If it is for young children you will want a larger scale which is more robust. G scale is a great robust scale for kids.

If the model railway set is for yourself (and your eyesight is good) you will probably want a smaller scale, so you can expand it and have more model railroad in a smaller space, with lots of detail. HO scale is a great scale for this.

I have the full scale details in my model railway newsletter.

Control of the Locomotive

The next thing to consider is the operation of the locomotive. If you want a simple train to run around the Christmas tree then a standard DC control will do.

If you are wanting to run 2 locomotives on the same track in the future, or plan to expand it, DCC (digital command control) is the way to go. DCC equipped model train sets are more expensive initially, but will be worth it in the future.

Train Set Manufacturer

Bachmann, LGB and Lionel are great model railway set manufacturers but there are many more. By looking at the finish and detail on the locomotive and cars you can tell whether it is a well made set. Pick up the locomotive and feel the weight. A good quality locomotive will feel solid and heavy compared to the light and lower quality locomotive.

Model train sets are not all the same. These 3 tips will help you and I wish you years of enjoyment with your model railway set.
