Potty Train a Yorkshire Terrier

Small dogs like Yorkshire terriers can only make small messes, but you will have to pay the exact same carpet cleaning costs to clean the carpet with urine stains, whether it was a Yorkie or a Doberman. To potty train a Yorkshire terrier is basically the exact same potty training any dog.

When you potty train a Yorkshire terrier, you have to take into consideration that a small Yorkshire terrier dog equals a small bladder that wont hold as much or as long as a bigger dog. So if you are late on your way from work or been out for a long time, you might find yourself having to clean up a little accident.

Living in an apartment or a home without a big yard is no problem for a Yorkshire terrier. These dogs only needs a small space to do their business which means that even a flowerbed can work wonders.

Some people like to make fun of little dogs in their knit sweaters, but it is actually more than just a fashion statement. During winter months and cold climates, the change from the heated indoors to freezing outdoors is very harsh on a Yorkshire terrier’s small body.

The sudden chill makes the effort to potty train a Yorkshire terrier more difficult as it can distract them from the whole potty business and cause them to run back inside. Once warm again, the urge will hit again and there’s no way to go but the rug. Sounds familiar? So especially when potty training a Yorkshire terrier, make it easier on your Yorkie by getting him or her a nice warm sweater for winter.

Other options when you potty train a Yorkshire terrier are having a small box available that’s lined with newspaper in your garage as a back-up potty spot during inclement weather. Make sure to only use this spot in emergencies as so that your pup will continue using his regular potty spot.

If your Yorkie usually goes outdoors or you take him for walks in parks, keep an eye on him. Look out for tall grass and bushes. Your dog may want to sniff a certain spot and could potentially end up being bit by a snake.

Try and be courteous to your neighbours if your dog has made a small mess outside. It might be small, but it is still dog poop that needs to be picked up quickly.

Not to mention that the dog poop on their shoes might not be visible until it is tracked into the carpet. That will definitely not win you an invitation your neighbours next b-b-q. It is your responsibility to clean up after your dog. And don’t try to get out of it by arguing that it doesn’t matter because it is so small. Believe me, it matters to anyone who doesn’t own it.

Potty training a Yorkshire terriers is no different than it is for bid dogs. You can start off with crate training first to help establish good behavior until a routine is set in place. Some little dogs are so spoiled because they are so used to getting a lot of attention n their owners laps. It is very important that you practice positive reinforcement in order for your dog to know exactly what he needs to do to make you happy.
